Attn: suburban hip-hop eulogists – B. Dolan and his cobelligerent, Alias are set to rain all over your funeral procession. Fallen House, Sunken City is the sophomore release from RI, rapper/artist/activist/impresario, Bernard Dolan. With the help of fellow New Englander and prodigious beatsmith, Alias, this duo is set to knock the dust off your boombox and slap you right out of your little sister’s pants. In the first single, ‘Fifty Ways to Bleed Your Customer’, Bernard and Brendon represent like the second coming of Chuck D and the Bomb Squad, respectively. I’m usually not one to make arbitrary predictions about an upcoming record (that’s a lie), but I’m going to go ahead and dub this the first great hop hop album of Twentyten. ‘Fallen House’ will also feature guest appearances by P.O.S., Cadence Weapon, Buddy Peace, and Providence’s What Cheer? Brigade. Just make sure there is plenty of water in your bomb shelter on March 2nd.*

Banksy’s new film, Exit Through the Gift Shop premiered last night, at the Sundance film festival. My sources say it is absolutely brilliant. As should be expected, there were no gracious speeches or publicity photos from the elusive artist, but there was clear evidence of his arrival in Park City, Utah. Viva, Banksy!
I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to the new album from Cars & Trains (aka Tom Filepp). As luck would have it, this Portland, OR artist will be releasing his sophomore record, The Roots, The Leaves, on Fake Four, this Tuesday, and this video for “Intimidated by Silence” is fresh as all getout.

Wyclef continues to fight the important fight for Haiti, releasing a remix and video of his song “Hold On, with Jamaincan dancehall artist, Mavado. It’s difficult to downplay the impact that philanthropic artists and celebrities like Wyclef have had on the Haitian relief effort. Bigup Wyclef, Clooney, and my old drinking buddy Tobey Maguire for setting a new standard in relief giving.
While this may sound more like a funeral dirge to Team Coco, I can’t remember television ever being this good. Conan joins Will Farrell, Beck, Ben Harper, Billy Gibbons, Max and the boys in a moving and apropos rendition of Lynard Skynard’s “Freebird.” We are officially holding our collective breath until September, when Conan rises from the ashes of NBC –a fearsome, pompadoured phoenix– to lay waste to his enemies and usher in a new age of watchable late night programming. Godspeed you! Ginger Emperor.
“So, did Conan return the wayward daughter of King Osric to her home. And having no further concern, he and his companions sought adventure in the West. Many wars and feuds did Conan fight. Honor and fear were heaped upon his name and, in time, he became a king by his own hand… And this story shall also be told.”
So, The Flaming Lips, andStardeath & White Dwarfs have released their cover of Pink Floyd’s, The Dark Side of the Moon. For my money, the record is a brave and exciting re-imagining of a long-celebrated classic. It’s like stumbling into a karaoke bar.. on mars.. with a headful of mescaline.. and a pocketful of drink tickets. Righteous support by Peaches and the great Henry Rollins, hard psych-funk licks, and an epic flare for the dramatic had me dialed right in, for the duration of the album, which is available, for a limited time, on iTunes. The only thing better than hearing these monsters rip into a classic, and boldly wear the guts for everyone to see, is reading all the feigned indignation and melodramatic cries of protest from nostalgic, nimble-fingered, preservationists. Here are a couple noteworthy examples:
“Someone just go ahead any mark this as the death of music. This is offensive. Hey I have an idea, while you guys are at it, why don’t you get together and desecrate the Mona Lisa or re-shoot the Godfather.” -DROBSTL
“It’s as if they sprayed vulgar graffiti all over the pyramids at giza” -Vahid
While this effort is sure to spawn many more hyperbolic and improper analogies, I believe there will be those that are mature enough to realize that a unique take on a work of genius in no way diminishes that original work. Those that can’t accept that premise should take comfort in the fact that, in 80 years, we’ll all be dead.
